This is the first time in history that a Ghanaian weightlifter will compete in the Olympics. Christian Amoah (17) will make his Olympic debut in Rio, competing in the middle-heavyweight class (85 kg).
Amoah was on the national weightlifting team that earned a ‘Quota Place’ for the Summer Olympics after they ranked fifth out of ten participating countries during the classification round of the African Championships this year in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Amoah made quite an impression after winning bronze at the 2014 African Youth Games in Botswana. He also participated in several important international tournaments, such as the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the International Weightlifting Federation Championship in the United States.
